Men are turning to dangerous and often ineffective methods to enhance their physical appearance, a trend that has caught the attention of medical professionals. This phenomenon, dubbed 'looksmaxxing', involves young men attempting to improve their looks through risky and unproven practices, such as 'bonesmashing' and 'mewing'. The term 'looksmaxxing' reflects a disturbing shift in societal values, where physical attractiveness is seen as the ultimate measure of success and happiness. This trend is particularly concerning due to the lack of medical expertise behind the advice being shared online. Influencers in the looksmaxxing space have gained significant influence by promoting aesthetic advice with little to no qualifications, leading to dangerous outcomes. Plastic surgeons are now seeing the fallout of these practices, with an increase in patients requiring corrective procedures for complications arising from self-injected filler. The dangers of DIY filler are severe, including infections, migration, autoimmune diseases, and costly scar tissue removal. Despite warnings from medical professionals, looksmaxxers remain defensive about their practices, often dismissing the risks and focusing on the perceived benefits. This trend highlights the importance of critical thinking and the need for qualified medical advice when it comes to physical appearance. In my opinion, the rise of looksmaxxing is a reflection of our society's obsession with appearance and the lack of understanding around the complexities of physical health and beauty.
